The first thing you see when you walk into our house is the laundry room. It should’ve said, “Welcome home,” but instead it whispered, “Please remove your shoes and prepare for surgery.” Not exactly the warm greeting I was going for.
This room became my latest Phase Project — what I call the “make it better until we can make it perfect” stage. It’s for the spaces that deserve attention now, even if the full renovation will have to wait.
The all-white everything made it feel sterile, so I wanted to bring in warmth and personality. I tried thin stripes at first, but my textured walls had other plans — so, bold stripes it was. I laid peel-and-stick tiles on the floor, painted the cabinets and trim a deep blue, and added coordinating baskets to hide the chaos (after a full reorganization, of course).
The cabinets were a clutter magnet, so I found coordinating baskets to hide everything (after organizing it, obviously). My husband & I built a new surround for the washer and dryer, & it turned out better than I imagined. I even added a little ledge to hide the cables — and now it secretly doubles as a charging station.
It’s brighter, calmer, and actually makes me smile when I walk in. The best part? Laundry Sauce sent me a few of their products, and they just so happen to match the new color palette — plus they smell heavenly.
This space isn’t perfect yet, but it finally feels like us. And that’s what a good Phase 1 is all about.
